What Did We Learn This Month: Fitness, June 2010
Fitness magazine: June 2010
Fitness Cover Model for June:
Model Hollie Witchey from the Marilyn Agency.
Fitness is doing on one of those "flip cover" things this month so Hollie is on both the front and back of the magazine. Here she is!
When you flip the magazine over you will find a "Fitness Summer Gear Guide" for the best in running, swimming, cycling, tennis, golf and hiking. Gorgeous photos, drool-worthy gear and of course I am hyper-focused on the bike pages. LOVE!
Holy shit look at this!:
I want EVERYTHING on this page from the bike to the pedal pushers to the red top. Is anyone out there feeling generous?
Go get the magazine just to see all of the pages for yourself.
Also in the June Fitness:
"In Fitness and in Health":
The editors of Fitness offer their data on diet and weight loss in relation to the summer "wedding season." I used to work in the bridal industry and believe you/me--engaged women are as obsessed as an aging movie star with their appearance. It's a little scary to be honest...anyway.
My least favorite statistic: 5% of bridezillas according to the Fitness survey encouraged their bridesmaids to lose weight. BOO!
(Those are usually those whiny-ass brides who cry the whole time they are engaged. Feh on them.)
See it for yourself here:
Boost Your Sun Savvy:
An instructive article for taking your workout outside and the best ways to protect your skin. (I swear by Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50)
Best Abs in the World:
Kind of a fun premise wherein the editors of Fitness pick out top routines from around the world to work your core. I really like some of these moves and will try them for myself. Like these!
Weird Workout Woes:
The mysterious, curious and/or embarrassing physical problems some experience in class are answered by the experts contacted by Fitness including back-cracking (not normal but common,) teeth being covered in "filthy slime" after exercising (totally normal,) feeling light-headed after yoga (not normal,) and my particular favorite--farting in yoga class (normal!)
{Mind you that is not my problem but it is something I worry about when the room is very still and quiet. Moving on.}
"The Big Gulp":
During the summer it seems like beer, flavored water and fruity drinks are the perfect antidote to the hot weather but alas they can add on the sodium as well as the calories. Tips for what to drink and what to avoid to keep the waistline down.
The "Short Shorts" Workout:
Trainer and creator of The New Yoga Mat Workout DVD Tiffany Rothe offers ideas to work on your lower bits. I am going to try some of these moves on a new client this week. Great moves and so easy to do from home. This is my favorite:
The rest of the best of this issue of Fitness:
"Soothe Your Soles" which is all about taking care of your feet and toes during your sandal-wearing months. More people need to pay attention to this IMHO. Way too many cracked heels and dirty ankles are on display out there. YUCK!
"Middle Management" Nice feature on how women with personal work-related food issues overcome them to keep slim. For example a chef, a movie reviewer (she is eating snack food all day,) and a pastry chef.
"Fire Up the Grill": Totally great recipes for backyard fun. I want to try them all but the "Dark Chocolate Banana S'mores" sound especially yum.
And now the rest of the rest of Fitness:
The "Get Over Anything" guide was not my favorite--I have just heard it all before. And the "All The Rage" article which discusses women using anger to fuel their workouts and overcome stress could have been illustrated better. There were good kernels of advice there but it was just lost in the boring artwork.
Overall Grade:
B The "Summer Gear Guide" was fantastic and most of the health, fitness and diet advice were spot-on. Points taken off for being a little too obsessed with "skinny" and not enough emphasis on "healthy.'
But overall I liked it very much and would recommend to anyone. See you in July Fitness!
