"Love Will Tear Us Apart" (60-Minute Ride)
This particular ride I introduced to my students this past Sunday morning and it was met with actual, real-live cheers. Today, my class managed to give it a “whoop” occasionally which is about as much energy as they can muster on Mondays and I will always accept it.
Anyhoo, this is a fun, rock-n-roll heavy ride. Don’t worry about it being "too" rock heavy—I put some fun curve balls in there as well. Tried to get as many clips as I can from You Tube--look me up there at "BrooklynFitChick1."
Please to enjoy:
- Love Will Tear Us Apart: Joy Division
This is the band’s biggest hit from the early 80s. It’s about 3-minutes long and has a nice driving beat that gets people into focus. Plus the band has a very depressing, sad story which will ring true to the EMOs in the class.
- Ring of Fire: Social Distortion
I have some Southern roots in me (shout out Camden, South Carolina!) and I love Johnny Cash to the nth degree but this version seriously kicks ass.
- The Wasp: The Doors
Yes this is 60’s classic rock but this is not for hippies. This is sexy, heavy, pre-grunge stuff here and the beat is beyond awesome. (Note, at one point Jim Morrison sings “the negroes in the forest brightly feathered…” He is talking about a bird but some people don’t know that. I talk over that part. You make your own judgment here.)
- Sweet Disposition: The Temper Trap
Newer song with a nice, steady pace that is not rock-n-roll at all. Nor is it really techno. Give it a whirl. People get caught up in it.
- A-Punk: Vampire Weekend
Continuing the steady pace but even more upbeat. Hipsters can’t help but smile when they hear it.
- Walk This Way: Run DMC
I have yet to find the class that doesn’t appreciate hearing this come up. Young, old, black, white, whatever—it’s the very definition of a crowd-pleaser.
- Feel Good Inc.: Gorillaz
Everyone loves this one too. What’s not to love really?
- It’s All Been Done: Barenaked Ladies
Cheery, simple, very white-bread and safe. But damn if it isn’t so freaking catchy and fun. (Damn you Barenaked Ladies!) Lead singer went cuckoo and left the group to go solo. Dumb ass.
- California Sun: The Ramones
Two minutes of surf-punk magic. Watch them tweaked out of their minds here (allegedly.)
- Shake That: Eminem
This song makes the most rhythm-challenged person be able to bop their head to the beat. Just amazing, crass, wonderful and sexist Eminem here which is why it is most amazing. But please, play the CLEAN version. It is still plenty filthy but...
(See this video for the dirty version--don't say I didn't warn you!)
- Eminence Front: The Who
One of their many throw-away songs from the 80's that people dig.
- No Heaven: DJ Champion
Very dancy with a steady groove. Canadian DJ who creates some cool stuff. No, I am not Canadian but I happen to have a great fondness for the country and it's people. (Shout out to my brother and his family in Vancouver!)
- Jump Around: House of Pain
Very few people can resist its charms. Go on and JUMP! JUMP! JUMP!
- Take Me to the River: Talking Heads
Get the studio version which is really cool and not the live version which is really not.
That's all she wrote for now folks. Please send me your favorite songs and playlists. I am always looking for more tunes.
