"Meet a Blogger/Skinny Emmie/Emmie”
Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!
Today I am thrilled to introduce you all to Emmie of the Skinny Emmie Blog. I finally got to meet my Twitter pal in-person at the Fitbloggin’ conference in Baltimore this past May and found her to be just as sweet & friendly IRL as she is on the Internets. And today you get to meet her for yourself-yay!

Questions from Brooklyn Fit Chick:
- What is the name of your Blog?
Skinny Emmie (http://skinnyemmie.com)
- How would you describe it to someone who has not read it before?
Skinny Emmie is a weight loss blog that follows my transformation from 455 pounds to healthy. After being a Biggest Loser reject and thinking my life was over, I made a vow to snap out of that mentality to become “Skinny Emmie,” the person who lives a healthy, active lifestyle without physical limitations – no matter the weight. 112 pounds lost, a lifetime to go!
- How did you get interested in writing?
I’ve been a closet writer since middle school when I had a teacher who pulled me aside to say that I was good at it. It was the first time someone told me I was good at something I really liked, and have been journaling here and there ever since. I’m a brand marketer by trade, so communications plays a large part of my life.
Blogging has been a wonderful way of working through and expressing my inner thoughts as I try to make a life transformation. I also have a small collection of partially-finished non-fiction and fiction works on my hard drive that I hope to be able to share one day.
- What is your favorite workout?
This is such a difficult question as it completely depends on my mood. High intensity interval training helped literally whip my heart into shape, so I’ll always hold a fondness for it. I really enjoy lap swimming, weight training, and recently discovered Bikram Yoga. Love trying new things!
- The biggest physical challenge you have overcome?
Starting a workout program at over 450 pounds is so difficult do to, not just mentally (trying to beat a stigma, get to the gym, not be embarrassed), but physically. Pain on the joints, water retention, swelling, foot problems… I had all of these attributed to my weight. I’m still learning that my body can’t do everything I want it to for right now, as evidenced from a lingering ankle injury after completing my first half-marathon in April.
- Besides your Blog—what are you favorite reads?
I am a blog addict! I subscribe to over 100 blogs through my Google Reader and go through them regularly. If you write about weight loss, fitness or healthy living, I’m probably reading it. I’m also currently on a memoir kick, most recently finishing MOOSE by Stephanie Klein.
- What is favorite TV guilty pleasure?
Currently, it’s a tie between Drop Dead Diva and True Blood. I love the confidence the main character (“Jane Bingum”played by Brooke Elliott) in Drop Dead Diva has, and True Blood is just a ridiculous journey into fantasy-land.
- How do you motivate yourself when your mind & body are saying “Ugh, not today?”
When I’m really not feeling motivated, I repeat to myself “you are making a choice.” Do I choose to take action to live the life I want, or do I choose to stay sedentary? Sometimes, rest is the answer. Most of the time, it’s my “old” brain trying to take over my “new” mindset that fitness is a lifestyle that you choose.
- Favorite place in the world to chill out.
I haven’t been here in many years, but I always found my calm on the cliffs overlooking Blacks Beach in La Jolla, CA. I went to fat camp for years there, and it is one of the only places that has ever provided me with an instant sense of calm and stillness. In my everyday life, give me a comfy place to lay and a good book and I’m a happy girl.
Thanks so much Emmie!
