What Did We Learn This Month?
Women’s Health: January/February 2012
Women’s Health Cover Star for January/February:
Swimsuit model & actress Marisa Miller who, I have seen model in person and can attest to the fact she has an insane body! (I mean it as a compliment.)
Marisa is a newly married lady who at one point gained about ten pounds after meeting her husband and is now more careful about making healthier food options when she can (chocolate is still on the “must” list.)
Recently Marisa designed a paddleboard for Surftech (www.surftech.com) that is made especially for women (lighter and smaller and thus, easier to carry around on the beach.) Check out Marisa with her paddleboard here. She is photographed by James White.
So what else is in the January/February issue of Women’s Health?
“Hit Like a Girl”
Not sure if I like this headline so much but here we great advice on the proper technique for throwing punches in class and in the ring. Now go to your corners and come out fighting!
“Pump Up Your Yoga Practice”
I love these moves from created by top NYC yoga instructor Kristin McGee!
“When Your Body Attacks Itself”
There are some 80 different types of autoimmune diseases that can attack your body causing you to feel fatigued and ill. (Venus Williams caught one called “Sjögren’s” syndrome last year.) Here we get expert advice from doctor’s and former patients who dealt with some of the more common conditions.
“The Healthiest Cities for Women”
The editors teamed up with Men’s Health and ranked over 100 American cities in more than 30 categories to find the healthiest places for women to reside. (Who knew Raleigh was so ahead of the times!)
The “Healthiest Cities for Women” are:
- “Look to the Future” Raleigh, North Carolina
- “Let ‘em See You Sweat” San Jose, California (Go Spartans!)
- “Stay Happy, Stay Healthy” Madison, Wisconsin
- “Chew Away the Big C” Austin, Texas
- “Keep Up the Beat” Minneapolis, Minnesota
Alex O’Loughlin
The sole reason I can sit through an episode of Hawaii Five-O talks to Women’s Health about his favorite things about women, living in Hawaii and his go-to “shower song” (Johnny B. Goode!) among other things. Is he just adorable or what?
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:
- "Slim, Calm, Sexy Foods" Several pages of drool-worthy food that are nutritionally sound and will help you feel slim, calm and sexy.
- "Fatten Up Your Wallet" All kinds of advice for putting some life into your bank account including asking for a raise and garnering really cool discounts.
- "Sharpen Your Mind Games" After weeks of eating and partying my poor little brain could use some sharpening. Here we get tips on boosting memory, upping creativity and more.
- "Total-Body Transformation" Trainer Chris Powell of Extreme Makeover: Weight-Loss Edition created this excellent plan to get stronger and fitter this year.
- "Peace and Quiet" Women’s Health shows us how to tune out the cacophony of noise that seems to surround all of us (I thought I was the only one who listened to the radio while working to drown out all other noises!)
- “Brain Storm” Scientists are seeing a rise of young women experiencing strokes which is pretty damn scary.
Overall Grade:
A-! A really good issue with plenty of useful information and workouts I can’t wait to try out.
