Women’s Health Cover Star for April: 

Kristen Bell who from her interview with the magazine appears to not only funny, smart and kind but is also a big-time animal lover. She and her fiancée (actor Dax Sheppard) are avowed vegans and have taken in two rescue dogs plus a few sloths who needed a home. (Really!)

 

Bell is as obsessed with “cupcakes” as she is with animals and by that I mean she is really into butts. Her own (which she keeps in shape with the help of Physique 57 Ballet Barre classes) those of her House of Lies co-star Don Cheadlee who bares his “beautiful chocolate bun-cakes” on the show quite often. (Note to self—add House of Lies to DVR.)

 

The gorgeous actress is photographed by Jeff Lipsky and graces the back cover as well in the special Women’s Health “Beauty Bonus” where you will find tons of articles and advice on how you can become even more gorgeous than you already are. (As if THAT were possible!)

For some strange reason Cee Lo Green has been on my brain. Ever since I read about his love for animals and then noticed he brought his kitty Purrfect to The Voice set—I knew I found a kindred spirit.

So today’s playlist is in honor of Cee Lo & Purrfect. I highly recommend a cat’s love in your life!

Not his best work but I just love the beat of this song and it has such a great build to it. Really starts off a class well.

  

 

• Last Nite: The Strokes

The just right tune when I need to get my indie rock groove going.

This song popped onto my iPod shuffle the other day and made me smile. Just had to use it and I am highly amused by the joyous expressions when my class hears the first few notes. “Give me a beat!” (Look out for a cameo by a young Paula Abdul.)

I never tire of this song.

 

 

 

 

• When You’re Falling: Afro Celt Sound System

One of my favorite “go to” climb songs.

 

 

 

 

• Shake it Out: Florence and the Machine

I am simply obsessed with this song. “So shake it out! Oh oh oh!

 

  

 

 

• She Bop:  Cindy Lauper

Sounds very innocent but Cindy is singing about naughty self-love and it is awesome.

 

 

 

• Hang Fire: The Rolling Stones

Because The Stones rule.

 

 

 

• How You Like Me Now: The Heavy

If you are not familiar with this funky tune—click on this video now! You will thank me later. (You’re welcome!)

 

 

 

 

• All My Life: The Foo Fighters

If you need a hard-charging song to get you over that treadmill hurdle—this one will do the trick.

 

 

 

• Praise You: Fatboy Slim

This is another favorite of mine for climbing. It’s just so bouncy and positive

 

 

 

 

• Turn it On Again: Genesis

I love ending a hard ride with this tune. It just feels like a good way to end a hard workout.

 

 

 

• Underneath it All: No Doubt & Lady Saw

A groovy cool down tune that reminds me of my funner times in the 90s.

SELF Cover Star for April:

Carrie Underwood is on the cover and she looks totally stunning! (If I were blonde—she would be my idol.) Carrie is a Vegan and lives with her equally gorgeous husband (Mike Fisher of the Nashville Predators) and who prefers to cook for herself rather than dine out.

In the interview she explains this really complicated system for her daily workouts that includes a deck of cards with different exercises and body parts that she wrote on them. I had to turn off my music to read this section of the article twice because the description of it was complicated and took up my full attention. (Let’s just say this woman is dedicated to exercise!)

Obviously what she does is a winning combo because she is one great (and fit) looking woman. Carrie is photographed by Brian Bowen Smith for the cover.

 

So What Else is in the April SELF?

This year SELF magazine has created a new yearly challenge called “DROP10” to help you get a newer, slimmer & fitter body in five weeks without starving. Not sure if I like this new title or not (it used to called The SELF Challenge) but I have to admit it is catchy and most folks who say they want to lose weight usually want to drop ten pounds. So here we go…

All of the magazines are including sneaker reviews right now but none of them had the brains to include a cute little doggie wearing sneaks in her picture. LUV!!

· "Give Cellulite the Boot!" Tips for diminishing those annoying bumps.

· “Firm Up in a Flash” Really great toning moves from top trainers Katrina Hodgson and Karena Dawn.

· “Stand Up for Your Health” Did I tell you about my standing desk? I absolutely love it. SELF readers talk about their healthy alternatives to the regular “sit at your desk routine” including a woman who built her own treadmill desk!

Overall Grade:

A- I am really surprised at the lack of workouts in this issue but it is still well worth the read.

He offers us his tips for training and claims that even though he trashed his co-stars last season he still loves the dancing reality competition and is not planning to leave. (Personally, I love how he inspired Kirstie Alley!)
• Manu Bennett Check out page 20 to meet the ripped star of Spartacus (an awesomely dirty show on Starz—luv!) and learn his “gladiator workout.”
• “Speed Demons” The hottest looking sneakers for the upcoming season in really bright colors. Love this trend!
• "Tough Love" If you know anyone into the UFC, this interview with Urjah Faber will make them very happy.
• “The Meat Manifesto” If you are an unapologetic meat eater (raising her hands) then this feature on how to cook, grill and roast your way to good health (really!)
• “The CrossFit 5 Workout” The hottest exercise trend on the market I have yet to try is CrossFit and this article could be the very introduction I need.

•  Rachel Bilson Help me out. For some reason I feel as, Rachel Bilson, doesn’t even look like herself on this cover. Do you see that? I could be insane, never mind. Anyhoo, the petite actress is apparently fashion mad and lists among her “favorite things” a pair of Chanel boots that are making me drool (and cost $1325!) Check them out on page 124 if you want to see them for yourself.
•  “City Guide: Austin” Lucky tell us they found the best shops in Austin but I want to ask Miz Fit her opinion as she is fortunate enough to live there!
• “How to Organize Your Stuff” Oh my god these pages are so beautiful! I seriously wish I could create something so beautiful yet useful in my apartment. (But I am broke, sigh.)
• “Boutiques on Wheels” Another “oh my god” for me—cute shops on wheels! Wee!
• “Find the Perfect Bra” Very useful advice on how to buy the best bra for your body as most of us are wearing the wrong size. (Truth.)
• “The Lucky Guide to Spring Bags” Nothing is putting a smile more than looking at these cute purses. So adorable! (And yet I remain too poor to shop. Moving on…)

• Julianne Moore I have been a huge fan of hers since The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (oh my god—luv!) so I was happy to see her fabulous self on the cover. Just get the magazine and read about Julianne Moore for yourself. She is too divine to ignore and very few actresses today even compare to her talent or grace.
• “The 13 Best Hair Tips You’ll Ever Read” I am a bit obsessed with my hair so these types of articles always win me over.
• “Second Acts” This feature really got to me. René Syler at one time was a co-host on the Early Show but her life changed dramatically when in one month she not only was fired from her job—but she found out she also had breast cancer as well. Shit! Check out she managed to get through her turmoil and move on. She is now co-founder of GoodEnoughMother.com.
• “Memoir: Dreams from my Father” An interesting essay from Apricot Irving whose father (a missionary) moved her family to Haiti when she was 13 years-old and her return visit in 2003.
• “The New Voice of The New York Times” Here we meet the Executive Editor (first female to hold this position) at The New York Times—Jill Abramson.
• “Anti-Aging Skin Care” I am a girl who loves, loves, loves beauty products and potions. This story made me want to run to Sephora!
• “Reinvent and Find a New Mission in Life” Inspirational stories of four women who managed to overcome really crappy circumstances and changed their lives for the better in the process.
• “Your Anti-Aging Arsenal” The nutrients you need  in your diet to stay healthy and fight off disease.
