What Did We Learn This Month?
Shape: October 2012
Shape Cover Star for October:
Dancing With the Stars’ Brooke Burke-Charvet and the mom of four talks about how she fits in exercise into her busy schedule. According to Brooke’s calculations “…if you spend an hour a day, you’re only spending 4% of your day working out.” So in between her children’s doctor’s appointment and play dates—she figures how to get that amount in (or as close as possible.)
Brooke shares her personal “5-Moves in 15 Minutes” workout routine in the October Shape as well.
So what else is inside the October Shape?
“You Best Breast Protection”
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Shape does their due diligence in giving their readers the latest information on breast cancer research plus features on survivors Marion Pollack (Boynton Beach, FL,) Jamie Ledezma (Fresno, CA) and Hollye Jacobs of Santa Barbara who is pictured here with her gorgeous doggie Buzz. (He looks like such a good boy does he not?)
“October Workout of the Month”
Shape asked Los Angeles-based trainer Juliet Kaska to come up with alternatives to six “familiar moves.” I thought these were pretty great ideas!
“The Hot List”
I could hardly believe my eyes when my fit pal Erica Sara was featured prominently in the Shape “Hot List" and she damn well deserves it! Erica hand engraves her own jewelry designs which you can find at her site (http://www.ericasaradesigns.com.) Featured below is her “Race Bling” collection which is perfect for all of you runners out there.
“Strike the Right Pose”
Jill Miller of the Yoga Tune Up DVDs explains the proper form for doing a few basic yoga moves including the shoulder stand which I am always wondering if I am doing correctly and now know for sure. (Thanks Jill!)
“Cool Runnings”
I am a cyclist—not a runner; but this selection of the outdoor workout gear gives me a case of the “I wants.”
“Treadmill Tone-Up”
TreadZone instructor Jodi Cornish (Equinox Fitness Clubs in New York City) shows us a few new moves to try on the treadmill to work the lower body.
“Reach Your Peak”
I finally had a chance to try CrossFit at the Fitbloggin conference (along with the amazing @DubyaWife who has a really cool health & fitness blog you can find here) and was hooked right away. If you are curious about the phenomenon—check out this section. Plus, there’s a workout from Lauren Plumey who owns Shoreline CrossFit in Branford, CT.
And now
the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:
- "The Road to Slimville” Last December during an annual checkup I found out that my weight was 15 pounds heavier than I had guessed which was just a tad shocking to absorb at the time. If this is happening to you—Shape has an article here that could be of big help.
- Jamie-Lyn Sigler: The actress best known for The Sopranos and currently starring in Guys with Kids talks about how she stays fit with Pilates and something called “Gyrotonic.” (Any of you know what that is? I must try it soon for sure!)
- “Shape Up Your Pizza” Mmmmmmm, pizza. Okay—if you must have a slice then try these tips to keep it healthy as possible.
- “Taming Technology” Contributor Susan Campbell Cross advises on how to cut back on all of the electronic devices (mobile phones, iPad, Kindles, etc.) that we all seem to be hooked on.
