Hey there!

 

Last month I decided to start a new feature—“What Are the ‘Mens’ Teaching Us This Month?” wherein I recap the top “men’s” magazines and it has become something of a hit. In fact, I was asked via Twitter (@BrooklynFitChik) by one of the publications which one was the “winner” last month which is something I have never even considered before. (Can you imagine Prevention asking me that question? LOL!)

 

So here have Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health and Men’s Journal May issues and at the end of my recaps—I will declare a winner. Feel free to debate my choice in the comment section below.

Men’s Fitness: May 2012

•  Beto Perez: I have yet to try Zumba though I keep meaning to so I was really surprised to hear the inventor of the dance sensation is a male who travels the world teaching the world to shake its collective groove thing. I love the fact the Beto instills the idea of lessening the ego and being inclusive with classes as a teacher.  
• “Stone Cold Truth” Steve Austin talks about the last time he was in an actual fistfight, the desperation of opening a bottle of wine with a Sharpie and his love of manual labor.
• “American Kidd” Jason Kidd has been playing been a pro athlete since 1992 and he sees no reason to stop now.
• "Fuel the Grind" Tips for avoiding midday energy crashes by eating the proper food, keeping hydrated and getting sleep among other ideas.
• “The Men's Fitness Guide to Supplements” I am not big on supplements myself, but if you need more information about them—this is as good a place to check as any.

Lucy was generous enough to take time out of her Editor-In-Chief duties to answer a few of my questions:

• · How did you learn about the 30 “superfoods?”
  
  At SELF we cover nutrition news, along with diet behavior, recipes and workouts and these superfoods have been proven, through scientific research and studies, to rev up the body’s natural fat-burning abilities. By helping your body shed fat and speed your metabolism, just choosing the right food choices makes losing weight as easy as filling your plate— and when you start eating this way, your energy soars, you feel better and you actually want to work out!
  
  ·       How often do you work out per week?
  
  I workout daily before work, since it helps me focus and be emotionally and physically on my game. I enjoy training for a specific goal, like a race or to get faster and fitter, not necessarily for weight reasons, though I do find that working out is a great way to maintain a healthy weight and a toned body. But for me, it’s as much a mental as a physical benefit! It clears my head and helps me think better and problem solve. So when I get off my bike or out of the pool, I’m ready for the day ahead.
  
  ·       Have you always been athletic?
  
  Yes, I was a tomboy and a big athlete in high school and loved to row and ski and sail and run. I was always terrible at ball sports and later I learned that just because I had bad hand eye coordination (tennis was a practice in humiliation) didn’t mean I wasn’t athletic. Once I learned that I had strength, endurance and a dare-devil approach on the ski slopes, I found that I could be athletic outside the usual team sports definition that most kids do in school.
  
  ·       What is involved in your training for triathlons?
  
  I love to be outside, doing a sport or activity that allows me to enjoy that natural scenery and beauty of the Park or the running and biking trails in and around NYC. So for me, running, biking and swimming are ways to be fit and get this “natural” fix every day. Of course in the brutally cold winter days, I have to train indoors but that makes it all the sweeter to get outside in the spring summer and fall. So basically you bike, run or swim each day and cross train so you can avoid injury and be fit without getting bored.

·       What is your favorite recipe from the book?

The Mediterranean Baked Salmon. I love fish!

Rub 4 ounces wild salmon with 1 teaspoon olive oil. In a baking dish coated with 1 teaspoon olive oil cooking spray, place salmon, 1 sliced red bell pepper, 1/2 sliced fennel bulb, and 10 small black pitted olives. Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano and season with freshly ground black pepper. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes; stir the veggies; bake until cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes more. Drizzle with lemon juice. Serve with 1/2 cup cooked quinoa.


·       What lesson do you hope readers will take away from The DROP10 Diet?

It’s possible to lose weight and keep it off without depriving yourself. I love chocolate and eat it every day (dark of course—it’s a super food!) and I have my “happy calories” as wine or chips and Mexican food at least once a week. Samantha is just a regular gal with a really fabulous story to tell and no one is paying her to tell it.

And now her story in her own words.

 

“My name is Samantha and I'm from a very small town in southern Louisiana where if it's not fried or drenched in butter it isn't considered food. I'm 30 years old with an eleven year old son, and never been married but am in a relationship of 5 years.

 

Now for my story—I’m sure you have heard this a thousand times but I have struggled with weight my entire life. Never was what one would call "skinny" but my heaviest was almost a year ago when I began my weight loss journey in July of last year.

 

At 309 pounds I had sleep apnea (which caused me to sleep with a machine,) high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. What triggered me to get serious about losing the weight was the fact that I was taking medicine for my cholesterol and it was still high.

 

At 30, I knew I had to change something, then on a visit to the doctor for a checkup he asked if I ever considered surgery and that just hit home. I never thought I could be a candidate for that and immediately said no and went home to start planning some kind of strategy to get rid of the weight.

 

I knew I didn't want to do any fad diet so on my own; I just began eating what I thought was healthier food. I had done Zumba workout DVDs at home before but didn't stick with it but decided to give it another try. This time I loved it.

 

A few weeks later I heard a friend talk about an app she used on her phone to count calories and I decided to give it a try as well. Never before had I thought of measuring and tracking everything I ate but it worked and this became my new plan for food. It gave me the amount of calories I should eat for the amount of weight I wanted to lose and I stuck with it.

 

Luckily I love to cook and never in my life have I used so many measuring cups and measuring spoons but it is what has worked for me these last 9 months. I was averaging about a 20-pound weight loss every month and that alone kept me motivated to keep going.

 

About four or five months I began to get bored with Zumba and decided to search online for something more challenging. I knew I wanted something on a DVD again because I didn't live close enough to a gym and felt more comfortable at home. With knowing that I wanted something that would challenge me I began looking into P90x because I had heard a lot about it. I tried it for maybe a week and knew it wasn't for me.

 

I had seen where the same company that does P90x had a whole bunch of other workouts out there and began watching demos of them on You Tube when I came across Insanity with Shaun T. and I immediately knew it would be the challenge I needed. Currently, I am more than halfway through my second round of the 60-day program.

 

Now back to the dieting. I still currently count calories and just celebrated 150-pounds of weight loss in nine months and it feels amazing.

 

I no longer am on any medicine and I threw out that sleep apnea machine a long time ago. I have allowed myself one cheat meal a week since the beginning and that has helped me to get through the week. I still very much have issues with portion control if I don't plan out my meals. When someone asks me what food I miss, I respond that it's the quantity of food I miss not any food in particular. I am working on that.

 

I see my body changing everyday and it gives me the motivation to push through these insane workouts. This is my story and what worked for me and might not necessarily work for everyone but I hope I have motivated someone out there to get up off the couch and move because no matter what you do you are still doing something and that's what matters.

Recently I was given the opportunity to interview the star of one of my favorite Bravo shows-- the Real Housewives of New York’s Kelly Bensimon! How excited am I today? (Very, very if you know me at all!)

• What is your favorite exercise? 

 

My favorite exercise is running.  

 

• Your book features several recipes that look really yummy. Which is your favorite and why? 

 

My favorite recipe is the watermelon salad because it's vinegar on watermelon and that is unbelievable. I also love the supermodel salad dressing because now I can eat salad dressing, too.

 

• You give lots of tips on what NOT to do to lose weight but what is best tip for what you SHOULD do? 

 

Drink water. 8 glasses of water a day.  Even if you maintain the way you eat, if you drink 8 glasses of water a day you'll lose weight.

 

• Were you always good at managing your time or did having kids make you a more organized person? 

 

Having kids made me a better version of me.  Time away from my kids is really important.

• What was the biggest challenge in writing this book versus your previous titles? 

 

Being open to criticism. This is me opening myself open to all of the mistakes that I made.

 

• Are you working on any other TV plans for the future?

• "Core Knowledge” This is part 3 of the Fitness Body Lab and it is ALL about the core. Good stuff here!

• “A Hedonist’s Guide to Healthy Vacations” Getting away doesn’t have to mean weight gain and lack of proper exercise. The best healthy options for the most fun of destinations: Las Vegas, New Orleans and Honolulu.  
• “Germination Nation” Food & Wine looks at the “sprouted food” trend.
• “The Healthy Eating Program” Very amusing writer A.J. Jacobs (author of the upcoming Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection) talks about overcoming his reluctance to healthy foods and vegetables.
• “DIY Yogurt” Did you know you can make the stuff yourself? Really!
• “Healthy Snack Attack” Six recipes for “nom nom”-worthy treats that are actually good for you. Huzzah!
• Gail Simmons: The Top Chef star shares her favorite home recipes from her new book Talking with my Mouth Full.   
• “In Praise of Powerful Cabernets” Yes.

• Dianna Dahlgren: Check out the abs of this cover gal! The 22 year-old figure pro comes by her love for muscles & exercise quite naturally as her father was a body builder and her mom a competitive arm wrestler—true story! Inside we get insight into Dianna’s training along with her favorite way to relieve stress (shopping!)
• "Top Five Training Tips for Every Body Part" Figure pro Felicia Romero offers her tips for keeping in top form while maintaining proper alignment.
• “Flip & Grip” Pretty cool article showing how just changing the way you grip equipment at the gym can give your workout a needed boost.

• “Supps to Fill You Up” I am not a fitness competitor and am trying not to be judgmental about the use of supplements but I am not a fan of this list of the best supplements (according to the editors) for helping you feel full. Please know that eating lean proteins and drinking plenty of water throughout the day for MOST of us will do the trick. Please!
• “Top 5 Glutes Exercises” The best moves to get your fanny in shape.
