Jessica Alba graces the cover and talks about her new book in the March issue. Yes—Jessica is now an author! The insanely beautiful actress has written her first book, The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You filled with her advice on beauty, fashion, food and living the “natural life.”
Jessica is big on being kind to the environment. Her business, The Honest Company, sells eco-friendly home items and she is big on organic beauty products.

How stress can affect your efforts to lose weight and get fit. Don’t stress yourself out people—give yourself a break once in a while!
Overall Grade: A-! Loved the workouts and the motivational pages in this issue.

“Girls on Fire” One of the things I love about this magazine is the women they feature and by that I mean healthy women with real muscles! How refreshing is that, people? On the cover of the March issue we get four “fit cover models” who offer their advice on everything from self-confidence to tips for busting a fitness rut.
Here are the four models and their favorite time to get a good sweat going:
• Midori Rutledge: Morning “It sets me up for the rest of the day.” • Rachel Davis: “I prefer afternoons but because of work, I’m limited to late evening workouts.” • Angelike Psoinos Norrie: “Anytime I can fit it in, but when I lift in the afternoons, it makes my mornings super-charged with perfect meal planning and I have tons of energy the rest of the day.’ • Heather Robertson: Early afternoon—“I’m not a morning person. I like to have breakfast, a cup of coffee and go through my e-mails. Then I am good to go.”

Is it as awesome as I think it is? • “Balancing Act” I am a BIG fan of probiotics and so is Bicycling apparently—read all about it here. • “Winter Warriors” And now for some gear that will inspire me more to get outdoors in the winter. • “Home Remedies” What every cyclist should keep at home to handle common cycling issues. • “The 2013 Reader’s Choice Awards” 5,000 readers answered the annual Bicycling survey and offer their opinions on a variety of topics from favorite pro cyclists (no one names Armstrong in case you are wondering) to whether or not they would cycle naked if they could. (Read it for yourself to find out!)
More: February 2013 • Katie Couric: The star of the new hit talk show Katie admitted to having a pretty easy going life for her first 40 years and then she turned 41. Her husband Jay Monahan died of cancer in 1998 and then a few years later her sister did as well. Her time as the anchor of the CBS Evening News was troublesome and she was becoming more known for dating younger men than her news chops which would be irritating for anyone to deal with. Good interview with Couric and she looks fabulous in the magazine. • “Make Over Your Metabolism” More asked four women their secrets for managing their metabolism ranging in age from 35-53 years old. • “How to be Employable Ten Years from Now” I love this topic and appreciate the advice here for keeping relevant in your career. . • “Cancer: A Huge Leap Forward” There is an “unreported revolution” happening in the world of cancer research and treatments that could be a saving grace for most of us in the future. • “Boredom Busting Workouts” If you are looking to add a little oomph to your workouts—try some of these suggestions including: TRX, CrossFit, Barre Classes and Dahn Yoga. • “The Best Superfoods of 2013” Honestly—some of these foods that are being nominated by a variety of experts I have never heard of but I am willing to now give them a try. (Do any of you know about black garlic?)
Prevention: February 2013 • “4 Foods for a Longer Life” One of them is coffee so I love this list for sure! • “Walk off 10, 20 30+ Pounds” Three different “fat-burning” walks are featured here and will help you lose any extra weight with jarring your joints. • “Happiness is 10 Friends” Studies prove that women with 10 or more friends are much happier than those with five or less. Will you add to my friendship circle? • “A Crazy, Sexy Anniversary”Kris Carr is a ten years survivor of cancer and a New York Times best-selling author (Crazy, Sexy Cancer Tips which I bought for my friend Jude when she was dealing with breast cancer surgeries and recovery.) Kris is also on the cover and gives an inspiring interview to Prevention in this issue. • “Hot Yoga Changed My Life—And Helped Me Drop 30 Pounds!” This is the true story of Johnni Southerland who lives in Evansville, IN and looks amazing. SELF Cover Star for February: Emmy Rossum Emmy is one BUSY lady! The star of Showtime’s Shameless (Never seen it. Is it good? Should I check it out?) and the upcoming film Beautiful Creatures is also an opera-trained singer (did not know that!) whose new album Sentimental is on sale right now.
Emmy is super-fit and likes taking group classes such as Soul Cycle, Flywheel and Physique 57 to keep in shape. You can learn Emmy's "Hot Body Secrets" at this link from Self.com.
So What Else is in the February SELF?
“The 13-Minute Fat Melt” Trainer Angela Leigh shows us some “stacking” workout moves that will help get you in shape and burn calories in record time.
"Get a Hot Everything!” SELF calls this issue their “You & Him” special edition so they make it much more guy-centric than normal. Not all of it appeals to me (the “Looks Guys Love & Hate” page, for example, is just plain annoying. I want to read about ME and not HIM when I get a women’s health & fitness magazine.)
However, I do appreciate handsome male trainers offering their best workout advice and this article does just that…
“Minimalist Floats to the Top” Check out these groovy new sneakers that are more level (with less heel raise) than “normal” running shoes. I might actually start running now!
“Cool New Tech Gear That…” SELF shows us the latest techy stuff that will help you run longer and stay more motivated for all of your workouts.
The Rest of the Best of the February SELF: • "At 17 I Never Thought My Life Would Turn Out Like This” I really enjoyed this essay by Kit Rich who found a note she had written to herself at 17 years-old asking her future adult self if she would have more confidence and feel better (about herself) in ten years’ time. As someone who lived through both 17 and 27 I can tell both Kit’s that life is a journey and serenity will be yours one day if you are willing to fight for it. • "Don’t Blame the Cookies" If you are still struggling with holiday weight gain the culprit might just be your office heater, common colds, the sorter or more woes associated with the winter months. • “Dude Food Made Light” Friends of mine have a dog named “Dude” and I am pretty darn sure he would want me to offer some of the tasty meals shown in this story. Nom nom!
Overall Grade: B+ This issue was lacking a bit in workouts for me. Hopefully next month SELF!

Shape Cover Star for January/February: The cover star this month is Jenny McCarthy who will have her own late night talk show on Vh1 soon and is also a columnist with the Chicago Sun-Times. I am not her biggest fan for my own reasons but I won’t dwell on that here. Instead I will say that I love the workout featured inside which was created by Jenny’s trainer Mark Harari who is hella cute I have to say.
So what else is inside the January/February Shape?
“Cool Ways to Blast Calories” I have never been great at working out in the wintertime but these pages may make me change my mind. If nothing else—I want to hang out in a ski lodge by the fire. (My apartment is freezing right now!)
“Spin to Slim” Shape asked Ruth Zuckerman of Flywheel Sports (a top-notch spin studio in New York City) came up with this routine you can do on your own.
“6 Clues to Your Heart Health” Cardiovascular disease is the top killer of women and not enough of us are cognizant of this fact. Shape has the exclusive excerpt from Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum’s Heart Book on the six things you need to pay attention to in order to keep your ticker healthy.
“Fast-Track to Fit” Jillian Michaels is back ladies & gentlemen and she offers us this butt-kicking workout based on Jillian Michaels Bodyshred.
“Step & Repeat” Weeeee! Ms. Lorna Kleidman designed this workout based on her KettleX Step class which is based out of the Fitness Cell Collective in New York City. I have taken a class with Lorna and can verify her talents as an instructor. Now try this routine which requires a step and a kettlebell.
“Katy Perry” Billboard’s most recent “Woman of the Year” recipient talks about how she keeps such a fabulous figure while she is on the road.
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape: • "Your Skin, A to Z” Shape’s big beauty story rocks my world with all sorts of recommendations for lotions & potions that are good for your skin. (Good job picking out Juice Beauty by the way—they rock my socks off!) • “Intimate Appeal” I am a big believer in owning pretty underwear even if you are the only person who sees them. (Need to try out the brand Wocoal…) • “Take That, Fat!” Simple (really simple) fixes to make your workouts more effective. • “Give Your Desk a Check-Up” My desk is messed-up and gross right now.
