Natural Health magazine: June 2010
Cover Model: No celebrity but an actual, real life model! Her name is Kara Thomas and she is lovely.
Magazine "BIG" Story: "Damn the Decades" A staple in women's magazines--this is Natural Health's version of the "getting the best you at every age" story offering advice for women to live healthier lives in their 20s, 30s' 40s, and 50s.
A nice layout with fun, cheeky wording such as this "Move Your Blooming Arse":
And also...
Cocktails for Health-Minded Foodies: A feature on the new trend of mxing drinks with nutritious ingredients like blueberries and snow peas. Sign me up! Breea Johnson, M.S., R.D., L.D.N. who runs a private practice as an integrative nutritionist and registered dietitian quotes research by Thai and U.S. researchers that apparently discovered that "alcohol enhances he antioxidant capacity of fresh fruits, increasing their ability to scavenge free radicals from the bloodstream."
A few yummy cocktail recipes are featured including this enticing Blueberry Lavender Mojito. Yo, Bar Keep!
Gut Feeling: Natural remedies are offered for those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS.) I have a friend who has had IBS off and on for years and it is seriously no joke. Women tend to have it more often then men with common stress being the big contributing factor. Smart, informative with very little "woo."
The Placebo Effect: New research on how the body has the ability to heal itself. A little too much touchy, feely woo for me. But at the same time not totally offensive nonsense such as the "You are sick because of the kind of thoughts you have" articles that have been popular the last couple of years.
Workout Story: Ideas for how to get a real workout while hanging out in the playground. I see public playgrounds and picture hundreds of snotty-nosed kids who had their grimy (but I am sure adorable) hands all over the place. No thank you. But if your neighborhood is less of a breeding zone, go for it!
Also in this issue are the best "natural" sun blocks, "Spa-licuous Meals,' a description of over dozen different types of massages available out there, and the best beauty "anti-agers" on the market (I want them all by the way.)
Overall Grade: B Good information for the most part but it is missing a little zip. Whenever I read this magazine and I get the sleepies for some reason. Let's see what happens in July!
