THE FIRM: Trasfirm Your Trouble Zones
The Firm
A friend of mine teaches a very popular kettlebell class at the Y here in Park Slope and I have often been intrigued to try it myself. However, I was skeptical about the potential joy I would find slinging around a heavy weight through my legs. So when offered a chance to get an early copy of Kettlebells for Dummies by expert instructor Sarah Lurie (here is a link to her Iron Core Kettlebell gym in San Diego) I thought, why the hell not?
Lurie is noted for Iron Core being the first studio in the United States to exclusively offer Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) certified instructors. (Does anyone know the best place to get certified in Brooklyn?)
Kettlebell for Dummies is an excellent investment for students and instructors alike. It follows along with the usual Dummies format. Black & White photos that are sometimes clear and easy to understand and more often are not. And text that is very thorough and answers just about any possible question you could have about Kettlebells. The book is in stores now, is published by Wiley and costs $21.99.
Word of warning--most gyms nowadays want you to pay or commit to beginner sessions before taking a kettlebell class as there is a chance of getting injured (just as in any physical activity) and its very important to follow the proper form.
After reviewing Kettlebell for Dummies, I knew I had to try it out for myself.
That's when I ordered a 5-pound kettlebell and video from The Firm franchise and decided to give it a whirl. Here I am with my new workout toy:
The Firm's DVD is titled Transfirm Your Trouble Zones which is a kind of cheesy play on words but you have to admit they attract some pretty fit instructors. On the cover and in the clip below you will see master instructor Kelsie Daniels. Check out her arms!
Holy shit balls! I tried this out and indeed it is a damn fine workout with excellent routines and cues. But heed my warning--you better have taken some kettleball classes first (or read Kettleball for Dummies) because this is NOT for wimps.
I got the DVD and 5-pound kettlebell at Walmart.com for a really decent price. Definitely a worthwhile bargain.
Let me know what you think of the kettleball craze. Do you have any favorite moves? Write back with your comments. I love 'em!
Until next time...
