Video Playback: Oprah "Making the Connection"
1997 (?)
The final season of The Oprah Winfrey Show will begin on Monday, September 13th and though her ratings have slacked off in recent seasons--I get the feeling she will get boffo numbers this year.
How many celebrities do you think will drop by to give her one last hug? ("Ladies & Gentleman Msssssssssss. Juuuuuu-lia ROBERTSSSSSSSSSSSS!")
How many giveaways will her studio audience enjoy?
What books will be considered good enough for her book club this final season?
What celebrity will go bat-shit crazy this year?
But most importantly...
How many times will she devote an entire episode to her issues with food and weight gain? Will Oprah finally have a definitive answer for us all?
Let's look back on the "Oprah Diet Roller Coaster":
First it was liquid diets. Oprah proudly trotted out 60 pounds of fat on stage in her skinny jeans and announced she had conquered her weight problems at last by following a strict liquid diet.
But she quickly gained back all of the weight and then some.
Then she hired trainer Bob Greene to get in shape and teach O how to "Make the Connection." Not only did Oprah co-write a health and exercise book based on this concept--the woman ran in the Chicago marathon that year!
But soon she was being sued by some ranchers in Texas and not only gained all the weight back during her trial--but she discovered and inflicted "Dr. Phil" on all of us after wards. (Thanks a lot!)
Then she went back on her "Bob Greene" program and slimmed down again. Every issue of her magazine featured at least one glamor shot of O in a snazzy outfit and looking all shimmery and cool.
But alas, Oprah once again gained the weight back and she was left without a reason why. She was so confused by it as a matter of fact that she put a "before and after" shot of herself on the cover of her own magazine!
This past season she devoted an entire episode to author Geneen Roth, Women, Food & God and now claims she finally has the answer about her relationship with food. Oprah swears up and down her dieting days are finally behind her and this book has given her inner peace.
Here is a link to this episode with all sorts of bells and whistles: The Oprah Winfrey Show: Geneen Roth
So what are you thinking? Are you on O's side no matter what? Or are you becoming a little more skeptical about her motivations? Let's talk about it! Let me know what you think and I will check in on O and her show this final season from time to time and let you know what I think.
In the meantime: Here is clip from the 90s back when Oprah had "made the connection" and ran a marathon. Very interesting.....
Until next time....whatever gets YOU motivated is fine by me. Promise!
