What Did We Learn This Month?
Recaps of Allure, Esquire and GQ
Hey there! Hi there! Ho there! I have some fun May magazines to recap for y’all so let’s get to it shall we? We are going from the pretty to the awesome to the silly today. Enjoy…
Allure magazine: May 2011 issue
Get ready folks—this is the annual “Look Better Naked” issue that teaches all how to do just that. I myself depend on soft lighting and faulty memories but I guess a little more proactive work could help as well. Oh well, let’s see what else they have for us.
- Lauren Conrad: The former star of The Hills (never saw it—my reality TV channel is Bravo) talks about her life after MTV fame, her latest fashion venture and the tabloid media who hound her for her body size (ass hats!) She sounds nice and down-to-earth.
- “Hard to Swallow” Holy shit balls! This was one intense article about the newest diet pills on the market that have women who are known to be “high-functioning” and “successful” hooked. A cautionary tale that hopefully will spare someone out there from this addiction.
- "Feeling the Heat" A ‘Sun & Skill Special” describing the skin cancer scare for 23 year-old Lindsey Floyd. Wear sunblock people!
- "Insider’s Guide: The Art of the Breakup" Tips on how to break up professionally from your personal trainer, therapist, hairstylist and personal physician. Good advice here.
- "Bare Essentials" The hair-removal questions we all have—answered by reporter Judith Newman.
- “Baring All” Tons of famous babes in the buff including Keri Hilson, Ashley Tisdale, Bridget Moynihan and Kaley Cuoco. They all look great though truth-be-told—I don’t recognize most of them.
- “Belly Dance” Five motivated Allure staffers take six weeks to work on their abs and we get to see the results. They all look great by the way!

Esquire: May 2011 issue
Esquire this month abides! So let’s dance on our favorite rug, put on some bowling shoes and enjoy a magazine that has the good sense to put sexy Jeff Bridges on the cover—hooray!
- “The Best TV for Men (Is on Cable)" Normally I like shows that men dig and am anticipating FX’s Wilfred like nobody’s business. (Guy meets a dog that looks like a dude in a dog suit to him but everyone else sees a real dog. Stars Elijah Wood and is very Meta…) Summer TV totally rules folks!
- “Q & A: Paul Feig, Director of Bridesmaids” Finally a female-centered comedy that looks like it will be actually, you know, funny. Feig helped make the best TV show of all time Freaks & Geeks so I will always give him the benefit of the doubt.
- “Lady Gaga: Fifty-Nine Questions” Apparently the people at Esquire are mystified by her success. (Isn’t this supposed to be a gay-friendly pub?)
- Jeff Bridges: An interview with one of my favorite actors of all time. Do yourself a favor; check out The Contender when you get a chance The Dude as President!
- “The Founding Father” A profile of (maybe) Presidential candidate Rand Paul. I admire his love (and knowledge) of the U. S. Constitution but cannot disagree more on his stance about the Civil War.
- “50 Songs Everyone Should Be Listening To” I’ll take their word for it. Some fun, unexpected choices here.
- “Hitched” Loved this! Esquire has the men’s guide for finding a gal, getting her to marry you and how to stay happily married. Good stuff here.

GQ May 2011 issue
One of my favorite comedians, Zach Galifianakis, graces the cover of this fun issue. Let’s dive in shall we?
Good on you GQ!
- “What You Need to Know about Rum” I really wish the women’s pubs would write stories like this. I am not joking folks. There is a historical perspective here plus cool tips on the best kinds of rum to buy for every occasion. Cheers!
- "Dead Kennedys" Tom Carson offers his take on what I personally thought was a crappy movie—The Kennedys that aired on the FLIX network (I had no idea I had that channel before this movie came into existence. He says we are too much in love with the fantasy of JFK and Camelot and need to embrace the sleazier facts of the Kennedy family’s life. Um, okay.
- “It’s Not Us, It’s You” GQ has the balls to make fun of Kate Hudson’s movie career. (I am still made about the two hours I spent watching Bride Wars—grrr.)
- “Mad German Auteur, Now in 3-D” Awesome filmmaker (and narrator!) Werner Herzog talks about his super-cool new flick that is all about cave paintings. It’s much more exciting than it sounds.
- Zach Galifianakis: Sort of a “Mad Libs”-style interview with the funnyman. Yeah!

That's all she wrote for now folks. Keep coming back and I will keep you updated on the latest news, reviews, silly videos, playlists, giveaways and all good things that make life worth living. Who can beat that?
Until next time…
