What Did We Learn This Month?
Bicycling magazine: June 2011
What’s happening in the June issue of Bicycling?
The June issue marks a bit of a redesign of the magazine with a new logo and, according to Editor in Chief Peter Flax, “….we’re aspiring to make this service more engaging and more graphic.”
Here is a link from Bicycling.com describing in detail the new look and feel of the magazine from the editors of Bicycling: (link here.)
(By the way, they go for a bike ride EVERY DAY at lunchtime. How jealous am I? Grrr.)
So let’s take a look at the new Bicycling shall we?
"Friends in High Places”
Bicycling offers a glimpse into the journey of six friends who decide to decide to take on California’s Mt. Baldy. We’re talking “12,000 feet of climbing” through an area of California I know quite well and am always in awe of those who can take those hills. The switchback up there will knock you on your ass people—literally.
“Let’s Get Ready to Fondooooo!”
The Italian import of “big rides” and group fun are taking the country by storm. Here we get tips on how to prepare for your own Fondo plus a list of the best Fondos coming up this summer. (Can’t believe I missed the NYC Fondo—dammit!)
“Get Your Back in Action”
I teach a few core classes per week and can always pick out the runners and cyclists who take little time working out their back muscles. You have to have balance in your musculature people! Try out these exercises adapted from Foundation: Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain and Move with Confidence by Eric Goodman and Peter Park {Rodale, $23.
"Lotions and Potions"
I love this article not only because I am the clumsiest person alive and am always in need of the latest ointments for scrapes and bruises, but also because they will use a gnarly photo like this one to illustrate it (looks familiar!)
"It’s in the Bag”
The best bags, totes and carryalls to suit your needs (I’m a sucker for shopping pages.)
“Urban Legend”
Leroy Hayes was a tough-minded (and overweight) loner in high school when Ryan Oelkers introduced the Philadelphia teen to the world of competitive cycling. The Cadence Cycling Foundation now sponsors 13 teams and more than 100 cyclists from Philly to Delaware giving kids a chance to achieve in a sport that is thought to be predominantly white and affluent. Loved this!
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Bicycling:
- "Power Up On Pasta" The carbs you should load up on before a big race day and what to feast on post ride.
- "Replace Worn Brake Pads" Signs your brake pads are worn, why they wear quickly and how to fix them on your own.
- "12 Jerseys We Love" Bicycling picks their favorite gear which includes an adorable striped number from Adidas by Stella McCartney that totally has my name on it.
- "90 Days” In case you were wondering how many days it takes to break a bad habit. Here we get strategies for avoiding traps such as eating too much post-ride and “flaming out” midsummer and more.
- “Beyond the City Limits” The editors and experts from Bicycling went to Austin to try out tons of bikes on the roads there.

Overall Grade:
A! Love the new look and there was plentiful good advice and inspiring stories to keep me interested.
Keep it up and see you in July Bicycling!
