What Did We Learn This Month?
Recaps of FitnessRX, Oxygen and Real Simple
Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!
So else is attending Fitbloggin’ (link) in Baltimore next week? I am arriving next Thursday evening and so far do not have dinner plans or know who I am going to hang out with so please get in touch when you have a minute. (@BrooklynFitChik) I am eager to meet my Tweet Peeps!
Anyhoo, I have some cool magazines to get us all inspired for shorts and tank-tops weather. Two are from healthy-minded magazines that I feel do not get enough credit for being smart/scientifically minded reads and the last one inspired me to clear the clutter from my life and live it to my best potential. So let’s dive in shall we?
FitnessRX: June 2011 issue
Our first magazine is FitnessRX (for women!) and their editorial mission is to provide “The Scientific Approach to Health and Fitness.”
- “Fat Loss RX Info-Bits” Lots of excellent information offered here that is actual scientific research and not anecdotal mumbo jumbo. My favorite: High Protein, Low-Carb Diet May Increase the Risk of Colorectal Cancer (So tell your clients to stop following those fad diets!)
- “Health RX Info-Bits” Smart stuff here as well including the study on how stretching before exercise has zero effect on injuries.
- "Fuel Your Fat Loss" Here we get the latest on tea “catechins” and caffeine being included in foods and supplements to help fat loss.
- "Nicole Wilkins’ Ms. Figure International Championship Workout" The cover star gives her personal cardio and weight training work that gives her a lean and string frame.
- "Jennifer Nicole Lee’s Secrets to a Strong, Sexy, Sleek Physique" FitnessRX talks to the fitness infomercial babe (Ab-Circle Pro) and HSN (Home shopping Network) fitness gear seller about her own personal JNL Fusion method of training.
- “Tummy Terrific” A solid diet and workout regime to calm belly bloat (should you have any and I am not saying you do…)
- “You Snooze, You Lose” Getting a good night’s sleep will not only rest your body and mind—but it is also essential for maintaining a healthy weight. Really!
- “Chilling Out to Lose Fat” America has become a society that is addicted to climate control. We never want to feel cold in the winter or hot in the summer so we stick with being indoors where these things can be controlled. By learning to adjust to cold weather/temperatures can really help with fat loss. Once again, really!

Oxygen: May 2011 issue
My favorite Canadian-based pub has an impressive May issue with exclusive routines and the latest research.
- “Beauty Food” Tosca Reno offers some excellent recipes that are good for you inside and out.
- “Find Your Balance” Jamie Eason talks about the perils of “tank-top training” (when you only trains the parts of your body people actually see) and gives advice on how to eat and train for your entire body.
- Vicki Pratt: Oxygen’s first (and current!) cover star dishes on her life in Los Angeles, her love of Gordon Ramsey, and winning against poker champion Johnny Chan.
- "Spring Forward" A page of super-cool gear that takes into mind the shedding and adding we all must do while training in wild, wacky spring weather.
- "Beach Body Boot Camp" Say you want to create your own personal boot camp to get your body quickly into shape, you are in luck because Oxygen has a program you can take just about anywhere. Really!
- “Look Great in a Tank-Top” How to get string, sexy, sculpted shoulders.
- “Training Your Lower Abs” Oxygen’s publisher, Robert Kennedy, gives his own personal routine where “failure is not an option.”

Real Simple: June 2011 issue
I just love this magazine so much. Whenever I read it, a sense of clam just overwhelms me. The June is pretty terrific I have to say.
- “6/11 Gift Guide” Page after page of amazing ideas for dads and newlyweds.
- "Summer Beauty All-Stars" The best for skin, hair and make-up that will last through the sweltering summer months.
- “What Can I Do About Rosacea” A problem of mine on and off for years. Good advice here.
- “Body of Evidence” A guide to learning more about your cravings, breakouts, sleep habits and more.
- “The Decoder of Milk” An informative page devoted to milk of all kinds including soy, rice and traditional.
- “Save Big on Summer Travel” 10 strategies for saving big time on your summer journeys.
- “Grate Expectations” Totally yummo recipes for the grill. Mine will be out on my fire escape—for reals!
