What Did We Learn This Month?
Recaps of Glamour, Martha Stewart Living and O magazines
Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!
So this week I am busy getting my Blog posts up because I am heading to the Fitbloggin’ conference in Baltimore on Thursday (check out the link here if you want more information.) If you are attending—please let me know so we can officially say “hello.” Love meeting Blog and Twitter pals!
In the meantime, I have some June magazines to recap today for your reading pleasure. Please to enjoy…
Glamour: June 2011 issue
Glamour has a full case of “Summer 2011 Fever” this issue so let’s dive in shall we?
- "What’s Up With All the Milks?" We get the rundown on the difference between almond, soy, rice and just plain old cow’s milk.
- “Your Must-Read Summer Skin Update” Its June so most magazines have a “skin cancer” feature and Glamour is no different. We get your standard true/false quiz plus a page of scary-looking skin moles that has saved 70 readers’ lives in the past (wow!)
- "5 Secrets of Rock-Star Abs" A pretty damn accurate rundown on what the pop artists with the fabulous figures do to get fit. It’s not fun and it takes a ton of work which is the honest, smart message to give to readers.
- “What I Want You to Know About AIDS: Unbelievable as it may seem, Jake Glaser is 26 years-old and has lived his entire life with HIV. Jake’s mother was the late AIDS activist Elizabeth Glaser who died due to complications of the disease in 1994 when he was just 10 years old. (He also lost his four-year old sister to the disease.) GET THE MAGAZINE AND READ THIS ARTICLE. If this gent doesn’t inspire you—you are officially heartless.
- "This Rising Star’s Four Rules for You" Glamour has a cool feature called “The 5-Minute Mentor” and this month we get NASA scientist Felisa Wolfe-Simon offer her “four laws of getting people to believe in you.’ Nice!
- “She Frees Innocent Prisoners” An excellent piece about Houstonite Alicia O’Neill who works to find justice for the wrongly convicted. Incredibly she was inspired after the disappearance of her friend, Jessica Lee Cain who was never found.
- “The Secret That Kills 4 Women a Day” Very important article talking about domestic abuse and women terrorized by men who supposedly love them. Good, smart stuff here.

Martha Stewart Living: June 2011 issue
Very few of us can achieve the excellence that is the oeuvre of Ms. Stewart—but dammit we can try! Here is the June issue with lots of “cool ideas” for summer entertaining. To those who attempt these recipes—good luck!
- "Summer’s Best Sips" I like my occasional glass of wine and we get some tasty choices on this page.
- "Here Comes the Sun" The best sunscreens to protect your outer layer this season.
- "Sunny Delight" Page after page of ideas for summer entertaining. Too intimidated to try these myself but you should go for it.
- "Home for the Summer" If you are lucky enough to have anything resembling a back yard and/or a porch—this is the article for you. And I am very envious of your life already. Sight unseen.
- “10 Feel-Good Things to do this June” From creating a sweeter pitcher of water to “perking up your meals with pecans”—little things can make you so much happier and healthier according the M.S. So you should try it!
- “Shall We Dance” Did you know dancing is an excellent way to keep fit and get strong? Well now you do-you’re welcome!

O magazine: June 2011 issue
I have said this before but I will say it again. If you have “OWN” on your cable system—check out Oprah Behind the Scenes of the 25th Season. It will literally change your life people! Just check it out for yourself. You will thank me later.
Anyways--- we have Oprah’s magazine ready for recapping.
- Maria Sharapova: The insanely beautiful and talented athlete offers us her favorite things in life and the thing that motivates her to win each match. (It has to do with holding up shiny trophies!)
- “Early Adopters” “Unleashed” is a program in New York City that offers middle school girls to train rescued dogs and find them a home. Amazing! Please consider adopting a pet if you are in the market folks. So many sweet little animals out there are in need of a home. You will feel like a rock star!
- "The O List" The producers of Oprah’s show get to pick their favorite things on planet earth. Their favorite things ever! (So you know it’s some cool-ass shit.)
- "Bob Greene Better Body Boot Camp" O’s favorite trainer Bob Greene gave three lucky-as-hell readers a chance to have a personal boot camp with him. Good story but I wish they included some workout moves as well.
- “The Air Out There” Did you know that the damage the crappy air outside can do to your health? Well it can be pretty intense but here we get advice on how to protect yourself without working in a bubble suit all day.
- “Surprising Summer Remedies” Dr. Mehmet Oz has some natural first-aid cures for us. Yeah!
- “Books That Made a Difference to Steve Earl” If you are not familiar with musician, actor, activist and all around badass Steve Earle—you damn well should be! Anyway, here we get his favorite books of all time.
- “25 Years!” All Oprah show shit going on here in this section people! We have Gayle King, O’s shows in Australia, O’s fashion hits and misses, O’s hair dos (and don’ts!) and all sorts of fun numbers including the most guests at one time (176!)
Check out O, the Oprah Magazine: At this link.
That's all she wrote for now folks. Keep coming back and I will keep you updated on the latest news, reviews, silly videos, playlists, giveaways and all good things that make life worth living. Who can beat that?
Until next time…
