What Did We Learn This Month?
Recaps of Bicycling, More and Muscle & Fitness Hers
Hello Gang!
So many magazines to recap and so little time. Let’s get to it, shall we?
Bicycling: June 2012
- “Fun 100s” The best century rides in the US including one of my favorites—the NYC Century Bike Tour. (Gotta remember to sign up!)
- “Whip it Good” Tips on how to make the best smoothies.
- “Start Here” The best bike paths to take along rookies learning the ropes of city riding.
- “Extremely Long and Incredibly Close” In case you were wondering what it is like to climb over 7000 feet to the top of a mountain in Colorado—this is the story for you.
- “Ready to Roll” Here we get an interview with the up-and-coming bike superstar Tejay van Garderen who seem pretty grounded and refuses to throw public “John McEnroe-style” tantrums no matter how hard the loss.
- “The Case for Carbs” Tips on getting more simple carbohydrates into your diet to make your rides and workouts last longer and heal faster.
- “Why Johnny Can’t Ride” Childhood obesity rates are on the increase while children activity levels are dropping at an alarming rate. Why public schools are giving kids a hard time about riding their bikes when they need the exercise now more than ever.
- “2012 Editor’s Choice Awards” Bicycling editors pick their favorite bikes for all occasions.
- “Smear Campaign” I love stuff like this—the staff of Bicycling had people try out disposable wet wipes for the road and picked the best of the bunch.

More: May 2012
- Chelsea Handler: The insanely successful actress, talk show host, comedian and author offers typically candid interview where she bats off her critics and shows her more quiet side.
- Bonnie Raitt: New interview with one of my favorite guitarists of all time.
- “Hair Removal for Grownups” The furry little animal they use to illustrate this story (page 50) is one of the cutest things I have ever seen.
- “How to Not Look Old This Summer” Tips for buying the proper sunscreen for your lifestyle. (And get new bottles each season!)
- “Cheap Thrills” Beauty stories are my crack and when they include bargains—I get very, very happy.
- “The Fierce List” More honors the women they think best embody the word “fierce” including Queen Elizabeth 1, Melissa McCarthy and Elizabeth Warren. All good choices but podcaster Julie Klausner better be on the short list next year!
- “What to do Now to Be Healthier 20 Years From Now” Excellent advice here on how to get your body ready for…adulthood let’s say.
- “Aging Gratefully” Love Anna Quindlen and this feature made me smile.

Muscle & Fitness: May/June 2012
- Jennifer Andrews: Muscle & Fitness Hers cover model demonstrates an excellent kettlebell workout
- “How I Train My…Abs” IFBB Figure Pro Ava Cowan and IFBB Bikini Pro Amanda Latona give their favorite abs routines.
- “I Will Never Give Up” Plus, we get a personal essay from Ava Cowan on how she fell on stage at the worst possible moment (the 2012 Miss Figure National competition) and she plans to make her comeback.
- Ann Titone: Muscle & Fitness Hers asked the IFBB pro to talk about a day in her workout life which means two-a-day sessions that start a 4 AM! (This woman is dedicated.)
- “19 Muscle-Building Power Foods” The best foods to fuel your workout.
- “Get the Butt of your Dreams” This may sound like a shallow goal but Pauline Nordin of Butt Bible fame (how has Howard Stern never heard of this?) makes a great case for strong glutes helping with overall good posture.
- “TRX: The Perfect Do-Anywhere Workout” I myself have the TRX and know that it can be so challenging to your strength and yet being so convenient that you can do it for 20-minutes at a time and see big results.
- “5 Moves for Outrageous Abs” Really excellent moves demonstrated by Figure pro Oksana Grishina.
