Women’s Health Cover Star for September: 

Cobie Smulders is on the cover and I am sad to admit to admit that I have never seen her show How I Met Your Mother. (Do you watch it? Is it as funny as everyone says?) After reading this interview I am convinced she is completely adorable and wish her well with her upcoming nuptials. (Cobie is engaged to comedian Taran Killam who is the father of her three year-old daughter Shaelyn.)

 

The 30 year-old the actress has tons of good advice to offer young women including learning to travel “on the cheap,” taking career setbacks in stride and date as much as you can before settling down.

 

My favorite quote from the interview is her pick for the one person she would sleep with if Taran gave her a freebie—Aquaman. (Her reason? "Then we can do it underwater.”  Ha!)

Love this article because I am really getting sick and tired of friends posting fattening meals on Facebook an on Instagram and now Women’s Health lets us know the very practice can be making us fatter. (Though I must admit I find the picture below hypnotizing...)

• "Watts Up!" Changing topics here but I loved this beauty features on how to brighten your skin.   
• "Stand Up for Your Health” Over a year ago I traded in my chair for a stand-up desk and my body has been thankful ever since. Seriously—“sitting is the new smoking” according to the experts and all those hours on your butt will cause serious health issues later if you do not make changes now. Really!
• "Kitchen of the Future" Women’s Health offers us a look at what kitchens will look like in the future and I, for one, cannot WAIT for it!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I will not complain about the heat again for the million, zillionth time (honestly—no one needs to hear me on that topic.) Let’s just suffice to say that I am MOST happy to be indoors reading and writing about magazines on a day like this and call it a day, shall we?

Anyhoo, here are my latest magazine recaps. Enjoy!

Bicycling: September 2012
•     “Hard Core” Bicycle offers quick and useful abs routines to get your middle stronger. (Hey editors—I teach four core classes per week in case you ever want to ask me!)
•    “Chips Off the New Block” My love for salty and crunchy snack foods knows no bounds and this lineup of the latest in all things chip-related had my attention. (Though nothing beats my low-salt Trader Joe’s kettle cooked potato chips—nom nom!)
•    “Vintage Rides” Combine two things I absolutely love –wine and cycling. That is pure bliss my friends. Here we get the best rides near vineyards around the world. 
•    “Sweat” Really great feature on that most human of physical reactions—sweat. All you need to know about how much you should (or shouldn’t) sweat is here.
•    “The Best Ride in Every State” The sole reason all cyclists should get this issue.

Prevention: September 2012

Her puppy’s name is George and he is on the cover with her—what a cutie!

•    “Stand Up to Back Pain” Simple steps to fighting off back pain that require no drugs or surgeries.

Demi is only 19 years-old but man she has lived quite a life so far. The teen has fought off many demons so far including an eating disorder, episodes of “cutting” and bipolar disorder. But these days she is fighting back both in her personal life and her career with a new focus on health & wellness and an upcoming gig as co-host of TV’s X-Factor.

To be honest, I am not totally familiar with her work but just based off the two-page interview featured in the August SELF makes me admire her for her candor and uplifting spirit (in her spare time she is a spokesperson for the antibullying movement: “Love is Louder.”) I am definitely going to pay much more attention to her from now on.  Go Demi!

"Shake That" happens to be both the title of a filthy Eminem song (that I love!) and the headline for this piece featuring trainer Bizzie Gold (how cool is that name?) who created a workout that combines Plyometrics, tribal dance and yoga. Stand-up paddling is taking off like crazy and this workout from SUP board promises to work your core like no one’s business. You have to admit—these people look amazing!

I love my beauty stories and these tips and tricks were fun for me to read.

 

“Hot Bags, Cool Shoes”

I am so over this hot, sticky summer weather and welcome any chance to glimpse at fall. These shoes and bags are doing the trick.

 

The Rest of the Best of the August SELF:
•    "Boxed Booze That’s Good” Who knew that wine sold in boxes would be so tasty?
•    "No-Surgery Fat Zappers" Hey, if you want some kind of a procedure to make yourself feel better that is your business. I shall not judge you.
•     "Real me vs. Facebook Me” An interesting article about how we can fabricate a whole new image for ourselves online and what kind of a toll in can take IRL (In real life.)
•    “American Pie” Recipes for pie? Thankyouverymuch.
•    “Indian Summer” Actress Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) models the fall trends featuring “Navajo” style.

Overall Grade:
B+  This is a good issue for sure but I just wish there were more workouts to follow. It seemed a little skimpy this month but still a great read altogether.
