Last day of Paleo 30-Day plan. I have to say--I did pretty well! Tonight at 9 pm "Sober October" ends. Cheers & Happy Halloween! @robbwolf @kerriolkjer #paleo #paleosolutions #jerf #eatclean
Pink is on the cover and showing off a seriously fit bod (she works out
with uber trainer Jeanette Jenkins
which makes me incredibly jealous.) The singer & actress sports some cute
moves in the Shape interview as she opens up about her over 50-pound weight
gain while pregnant with daughter Willow (she ate “a lot of cheesecake” those
nine months.)
Pink wasn’t in any rush
to lose the weight and instead focused on a healthy plan back to her pre-baby weight
and now works out with Jenkins five days per week. (I am now really, really
jealous!)
She shares her favorite
abs moves inside the magazine and you can get a sneak preview here:
So what else is inside
the November Shape?
“Build a Better Workout”
How would you like an exercise routine that you can do in two ten-minute
sessions per day and help boost your metabolism? Well LA-based trainer Patrick
Murphy did just that with are both cardio & strength based that you can
squeeze into your schedule before you leave for work and when you get home that
will leave you plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your life. (Win/win people!)
“Shape Your life”
Shape honors the “first ladies of fashion, food, film, fiction and more.”
They include:
This past June marks my
tenth year cigarette-free. I want more of you to join me so please read this article
if you are still a smoker and want to quit. Pretty please!
“Tech Support”
The latest in tech gear
that will help you achieve better workouts and keep you safer (the Cerevellum Hindsight Rearview Biking
Computer sounds amazing to any of you looking to get me a present this
holiday season!)
“November Workout of the
Month”
I love this!! Let’s say
you can’t get to the gym during the holidays and you need to get that workout
in. Just try this program (created by excellent trainer Jay Cardiello who is Shape’s fitness editor at large.) No
medicine ball on hand to throw around? Just use a pillow and your family angst
and you can get your endorphin rush!
And now
the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:
"Turn Back the Clock” Shape’s beauty editors talk about the latest in beauty RX plus natural
ways to look younger.
“Boot Camp” It is BOOT SEASON everyone! Now let’s
go shopping!
“Raise the Barre” I am all set to do my first barre class this weekend
(Physique 57—who is with me?) so this page held my interest.
“Ace Your Race” I am so proud of all
of you out there who are running in the marathons this season! Check out Shape for any last-minute tips you
may need.
“No Fowl Play” Advice on how to avoid
an epic pig out on Turkey Day. (I usually pig out. I am not judging anyone who
does the same!)
Apparently Dobrev stars in the CW show The Vampire Diaries which I have never seen so I have really have nothing
to judge about her except from what I read in the interview. The Toronto native
appears to be a nice enough gal who keeps in shape with yoga (she lets SELF know her favorite poses to get
the lean body she has) and has a desire to open her own studio someday. That
and she never checks her bag when she flies (me neither.)
Is it bad that it’s not
even Halloween yet (as I am typing this) and my mind is already thinking about
taking a winter break? Okay—SELF may have had something to do with
that because they go and feature a whole bunch of awesome-sounding vacations
here.
"Would You Own a Gun?”
I have never fired a
real gun and am terrified at the thought of it. But, I am a single woman living
in NYC so I can’t say I have never thought about my safety and whether or not I
should take lessons. Here we get a detailed report on the pros and cons of
owning firearms.
“Sculpt Smarter, Look Hotter”
Are you looking for a
quick sculpting plan you can do at home? Try some of these moves from some of
the best trainers in the business.
“Your T-Day Dinner--Slimmer”
I don’t know about all
of you but I have a hard time restraining myself over Thanksgiving. I love just
about every single damn thing that is served that day! Here SELF
offers suggestions on how to cut back on some of the gluttony.
“Have Wall: Get Fit”
SELF fitness editor Marissa Stephenson (who sports a fierce six-pack!) is the model for
our exercises from NYC training expert Rustin
Steward.
“One-Pan Wonders”
I like easy meals that
are also delicious and these seem to fit the bill just fine!
The Rest of the Best of
the November SELF:
"Vote! Your Health Depends on It!” Please tell me that
you are registered to vote and know where to do it? I hope so!
"Pot Legal? It Could Happen" A certain family
member of mine (who is three years younger than me and lives in Canada) would giggle
reading this article. And that is all I have to say about it. (Let’s see if he really
reads my Blog!)
"2012 SELF Fragrance Awards” I
tend to be a cheapskate when it comes to perfume (though over the years I find
them tough to take.) But if I were to splurge—SELF has some good ideas on what to get at the beauty counter.
(Or better yet—what to put on my holiday gift list!)
“Permission
to be Lazy Granted” Thank youSELF!!
Overall Grade:
B+ The November issue is a fine, cozy read.
Have you read the
November SELF yet? What did you think? Do you watch The Vampire Diaries? Is it a fun show? Let me know what you think!
This time of year we all
start to get super-crunched for time and the planned hour workouts can get
thrown aside for a quick 15-minutes of anything. Here we get Tabata-inspired
ideas from Jessica Smith author of The Thin in 10 Weight-Loss Plan.
2012 Holiday Gift Guide:
If you are looking for
healthy-minded ideas for holiday gifts this year—check out Fitness’ guide which has several
pages of cool gear that give me the “I wants.” (Specifically the Lululemon puffy jacket you can see
below!)
“Fierce and Fab in 14
Days”
Fitness asked master trainer Tony Horton(of
P90x fame) to give us a 24-minute routine you can knock out 3-4 times per week
to take on extra holiday stress calories.
“Danger in the Air”
Not to scare the living
crap out of you but lung cancer can strike those who have never even touched a
cigarette in their lives. Here we find out the latest research on just why
these cases happen and how you can protect yourself from the disease.
"Six Fat-Fighting
Foods”
Author Jonny Bowden (The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth) identifies the foods that will
rev up your metabolism. (Sadly, red wine is not one of them…)
"Pumped Up Poses”
Want to take yoga up a
notch energy-wise? Well then try this workout that utilizes hand weights and
created by Erin Jacques who
cofounded SLT Yoga (http://sltnyc.com/) in New
York City. I tried this out and you will get a good sweat going!
"Just Desserts”
I have been grain, dairy
and sugar-free for a month now so pictures like this (below) are making me
crazy! Fitness offers ideas to make those sweet, gooey treats you love to bake
while taking off some of the calories. (Win/win people!)
And now the
rest of this issue of Fitness:
“Take
it to Go” Tips for staying your natural gorgeous selves while travelling on the
road. (What to pack and what to avoid schlepping, etc.)
"One-Dish
Wonder” This kale and butternut
squash sauté fit my new Paleo regime and I plan to make this dish very soon
"Feeling
the Burn" For some reason this
story about a woman who felt left out in her spin class by mean girls failed to
move me. I was a new kid every 3-4 years of my life growing up. Sometimes you
just aren’t in the “in crowd.” Know what I mean? Go to class for YOU.
"Activate
Your Motivation” Whether
you need to change your diet or you want to good look for that bikini-weather
vacation you will take a few months from now—advice for getting a pan of action
you can stick with.
“15-Minute
Meals” Fitness offers healthy &
tasty recipes you can whip together in no time fast.
Overall Grade:
A- A great magazine to get you motivated during the holidays. Good
work Fitness!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!
It’s
Thursday and that means it time for my weekly giveaway—whoo hoo! This week I am
giving away three boxes of delicious cereal from the fine folks at Attune Foods
(www.attunefoods.com). The company
produces Erewhon cereals that were originally
created in the 1960s which is decades before people got turned on to an organic
and “natural foods” diet. The name Erewhon (pronounced “Air-wahn”) comes from a
19th century novel by Samuel Butler and was the setting for where
all people who lived there were responsible for their own health and
well-being. (But we all knew that, right?)
Here is more information about
Erewhon cereals:
Never Always
- No synthetic
additives or preservatives - use pure ingredients, organic
whenever feasible
- No artificial colors or flavors - use non-GMO
ingredients
- No hydrogenated or solvent extracted
oils -
use natural flavors
- No refined flour or sugar - use natural sweeteners
- No complicated cereal production
process - use simple processes
for cereal production
You can find Erewohn at Whole Foods, natural food stores
and food co-ops nationwide. They also have a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/attunefoods
So this week’s giveaway will be three different flavors
of Erewhon: Uncle Sam, Corn Flakes (with Sea Salt) and Raisin Brand. Get your cereal
bowls ready people cause things are about to get yummy in your life! (Attune Foods
will ship you the boxes directly.)
I
have the full details below on how to win but wait—there’s more! I am doubling
down on this week’s giveaway and offering a super fun “two-for” on Brooklyn Fit
Chick this week—whoo hoo again!
So here is the backstory…my good pals Brandi from Diets in Review (@DietsinReview/ www.dietsinreview.com) and Christine from
Dubya Wife (@DubyaWife/ www.dubyawife.com) and I bonded during this
year’s Fitbloggin convention talking about our mutual love for the movie Overboard. You do know about Overboard starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell,
don’t you? It’s only one of THE funniest movies ever made. Here is the imdb.com link with all of the information
just in case you have missed the million times it has played on the WE and CMT
Networks. (Honestly, this movie has been playing on a cable TV loop for over 20
years now!)
